Linux

Linux has a headless host daemon and a separate GTK desktop frontend.

ubiquitty-host builds as a static binary for x86_64 and arm64, with QUIC compiled in, and runs on glibc and musl distributions alike. The macOS app carries both builds and installs the right one on a server when you connect to it. See Remote hosts.

A GTK4 window, a Vulkan renderer with a CPU path, and text from FreeType and HarfBuzz with fontconfig. It runs local shells in tabs and splits.

Plate III on the FreeType arm: proportional runs set left, right, centred and justified in their cell budgets.
Proportional text on Linux.

What it has: sized and proportional text, images, colour emoji (bundled Noto Color Emoji), search and trigger highlights, OSC 52 clipboard, hyperlinks, input methods, pointer lock, the accessibility text interface, and Check for Updates for the AppImage.

What it does not have:

  • It does not attach to host sessions; it runs its own shells.
  • No QUIC.
  • No rich text blocks.
  • A simpler permission policy: local programs allowed, agent and remote origins refused, no consent prompt.

To build from source on Linux, install the platform prerequisites, including FreeType, Fontconfig, HarfBuzz and glslc:

Terminal window
# GCC 14 or newer, or Clang 19 or newer; GTK4 and Vulkan development packages
./Scripts/check-linux-build-prerequisites.sh
export CC=gcc-14 CXX=g++-14
./Scripts/build-linux-gtk.sh Release

Package names and other distributions: Install.
